Helping Out:
Special Needs Kids
In 1998 a young American teacher on holiday on Harbour Island decided to move here and devote her life to special needs kids. Today Lang Fincher works with the Bahamian Ministry of Education to pioneer the testing and teaching of kids with physical and mental handicaps. The organization they developed, Exceptional Education Outreach, trains teachers and volunteers to provide the special attention these kids need to be able to learn, on Harbour Island, on Eleuthera, and beyond.
EEO currently has three afterschool programs running- one on Harbour Island-
that they use volunteers for. Sign around town tell how to help. EEO is in 6 schools now and reaching over 100
children daily. Lang says, "Its hard work but worth it. My teachers dedication make all the
difference."
